It’s a sad day here at Yarnomat because all the storage tubs, shelves and boxes are empty. The last order is sitting next to the door waiting to be posted in the morning, and then that’s it.

My shelves might be empty, but it’s cheering to think of all that yarn in the hands of new owners, waiting to be knitted, crocheted, or otherwise transformed into something wonderful.

Now that the store has closed, I’m going to focus on knitting pattern design. There are already some free patterns here, and I plan to add more. I’m also going to develop some new patterns for sale, and will write about them here when they are ready.

If you want updates by email when new patterns are ready, please subscribe to the Yarnomat newsletter. I will send the newsletter out whenever there are new patterns available, whether free or for sale.

This morning I announced that the Yarnomat sock yarn store will close on 8 February, and marked all the stock down to half price. I’d hoped that I might be able to recover some of the purchase costs, and give my wonderful customers a last chance to get hold of some the wonderful sock yarns that can be hard to find in Australia.

I’d expected to sell maybe half the stock before closing up in a couple of weeks, thus leaving me with a big personal stash of sock yarn to work through over the next few years.

Silly me. Your orders have flooded in today, and there’s less than a quarter of the stock left. At this rate, it may all be gone before the store officially closes.

If you have had trouble trying to access the Yarnomat store today, I’m sorry! Please try again. You will get through eventually.

There are still some lovely yarns available (as at Thursday night), including a good selection of the Flat Feet handpainted flats. I’ve been knitting a pair of Marywarmers for my sister with Flat Feet, and love the smooshy way it knits up. It comes quite crinkly out of the flat, so blocking is more important than usual to get a nice professional finish.

All stock at Yarnomat is half-price from now until the doors close for good on Monday, 8 February 2010. So this is a great opportunity to grab some great sock yarn at incredibly low prices.

Yarnomat has been quiet recently, and I had been planning to re-launch it in January.

Well, I’ve been doing some soul-searching, and honestly examined the financials, and have decided instead to close the yarn store for good. It’s been lovely to have a miniature yarn store in my home, but I just haven’t had the time or the funds to build it into a profitable business.

I still love knitting, and sock knitting especially, and will continue developing and publishing patterns at the Yarnomat site. I just won’t be selling sock yarn there any more.

Thanks for shopping at Yarnomat over the last couple of years!

I haven’t had much time lately to work on Yarnomat, and the store was looking a bit tired. In my other life, I teach technical communication and do some consulting work, and have been pretty busy with that lately.

I still love knitting, sock yarn and Yarnomat though, and the store will be back, I promise! I’m moving Yarnomat to a new storefront provider (Shopify) and designing some new knitting patterns.

Please join me in January for some great re-opening bargains at the new Yarnomat store. For now, you can always find me at Ravelry as verylisa, leave a comment here or send me an email.

There are lots of new colourways of Flat Feet available at Yarnomat. Since the Aussie dollar has improved, I’ve been able to take $5 off the price of each flat. You can now buy Flat Feet for just $32.

The hand-dyed flat is a fun new way to knit socks. Yarn artists paint unique patterns on matching pairs of machine-knitted rectangles of sock yarn. Each flat is different, so we photograph them all individually. That way you can be sure that the flat you see is the flat you’ll get.

You knit directly from the flat: no skeins, no balls, and no tangles! Remove the undyed waste yarn and discard it. To knit two socks simultaneously, split at the centre waste yarn and start the second sock on the second half. Only one end unravels easily; if your yarn doesn’t unravel as you expect, re-start at the opposite end of the flat.

Because the yarn has been knitted into a flat, there will be a crimp in your working yarn. Knit tightly for socks as you normally would. The crimp will release once you block your work, and then your stitches will become even.

You can stuff a hand-dyed flat into your pocket or bag, or throw it over your shoulder for easy knitting.

This is a great value sock yarn at an introductory price of just $15.00 for a 100 gram ball–plenty for an average pair of socks. It is self-patterning and knits up into a variety of fun patterns that mimic fair isle (if you squint a bit).

At this price, it’s a good, easy-care choice for baby garments, hats and socks too.

After a quiet month, we have some news! Yarnomat has some new stock for you.

Some of the most popular Cherry Tree Hill colourways are now back in the store, and we’ll be restocking more colourways in response to demand. So if there’s a specific colourway you’d like moved to the top of the restocking queue, please tell me. You don’t need to commit to buying any yarn–just express a preference for a particular colourway, and we’ll add it to Yarnomat’s next order from Cherry Tree Hill. Eventually we might have all those delicious Cherry Tree Hill colourways in stock all the time, but there so many colourways that it’s not yet practical to bring them all in at once. (Maybe one day…? I can dream!)

We now have four colourways of Cherry Tree Hill Supersock DK in stock. This is the same yarn as the regular Supersock, but twice as thick for faster knitting. I haven’t yet tried knitting with it myself, but it looks and feels yummy. Give it a go if you prefer thicker socks. It would also be a great choice for hats, mittens and scarves.

Noro Kureyon Sock is now back in stock at Yarnomat, and we have five new colourways. The first batch sold out before I had a chance to knit anything for myself! This time there is a ball with my name on it, probably for a pair of mittens or armwarmers. Some knitters on Ravelry are doing gorgeous things with cables and Noro Kureyon Sock. The long colour repeats seem to work magic with dramatic cabled patterns.

Araucania Ranco is back in stock too, with a couple of new colourways. These kettle-dyed yarns have a wonderful depth of colour.

Finally we have some of the most popular Crystal Palace colourways back in stock, with more on the way. As with Cherry Tree Hill, the Crystal Palace range is enormous and we won’t be able to keep all the colourways in stock all the time, so please let me know if there’s a particular colourway you’d like bumped to the top of the restocking queue.

Still to be photographed and uploaded: some new colourways in Crystal Palace Panda Cotton, and a brand new range of soy-and-bamboo sock yarn from Crystal Palace. Expect to see them up in the store over the next few days.

If you like the range and service available through Yarnomat, and you’d like us to add new stock more often, please tell your knitting and crocheting friends about Yarnomat. As we sell more sock yarn, we’ll be able to order more stock, and add new yarns to the range. I can never have enough sock yarn to choose from, and I know I’m not the only one!
